Here we are me dears, It's the end of May and the end of Spring. May Started off with Tulips and ended with the roses in full bloom
May is always a busy month for us, what with the Eurovision party, Our Anniversary, holidays in Spain and a host of Birthdays to celebrate; the garden was a bit neglected. Having said that it just got on with it by itself and when we returned from our holiday it had exploded into growth and flower.
The delicious Rosa “Gertrude Jeckyll” is flowering like mad this year and the scent is divine.
We are over the moon that 'the famous non-flowering Essex Rose' has come into bloom. It was grown from seed by 'the Boys' in Essex and has never flowered hence it's name. We will have to change it's name now.
Last but in no way least, Jon's magnificent Rosa 'Veilchenblau'
Grown from a cutting, it is now spectacular.
As is the now gigantic Clematis “General Sikorski”
It is absolutely smothered in flowers of the most fabulous colour. I love it.
I have a passion for Thalictrum and we now have three different varieties.
This one was our first; Thalictrum aquilegiifolium
I have never had much success growing Freesias. This year I thought to give it another bash. The first has flowered and all the others are full of bud. Something to look forward to next month me thinks.
Agapanthus “BlackJack” is pure joy and the colour is much, much darker in real life than I can capture on film.
At the beginning of May we still had the late Spring flowers to keep us company until the early Summer plants began to kick in at the end of the month.
The tulips were as joyful as ever.
Mexican fleabane; Erigeron karvinskianus and Lily of the valley; Convallaria majalis
Aquilegia chrysantha “Yellow Queen”
Veronica gentianoides
Scilla peruviana (Portuguese Squill)
Hesperis matronalis
Fox Glove; Digitalis purpurea.
And the adorable Mimulus, also known as monkeyflowers, Gawd knows why.
Gosh there was a lot more to see this month than last time but it's now time to climb up into the Land Rover and take a tour of our vast estate.
We will end our visit with Jasmin and a delightful regal pelargonium.
and we are looking forward to seeing this Clematis; - 'Comtesse de Bouchaud' in full flower in June
Donny's pick for 'The Fuchsia Fest' sneak preview this month is Fuchsia 'Deep Purple'.
May is certainly "the month of change" for the garden, as everything zooms into growth! One can almost see plants growing before our eyes.
ReplyDeleteNow, let's see how summer develops... Jx
There is a plenty of plants waiting to do their stuff in June; lets hope the weather improves and we actually have a proper Summer.
DeleteBlooming marvellous, Madam A!!

Thank you me dear.
Delete"The famous non-flowering Essex Rose" is a gorgeous colour and looks like it smells divine - does it? And the single Aquilegia "Yellow Queen" in your photo has me in mind of some deep sea jellyfish - it's quite other worldly.
ReplyDeleteAs always, your garden is beautiful! May is my favourite gardening month because, as you say, many things "explode into growth and flower".
Now, it seems Donny has a bit of competition in the "Spotted in the Extensive Gardens" stakes as I can see a certain someone in your kitchen! Peculiarly, he doesn't look like he's pouring you a drink to welcome you in from your long trek back, though?
Eagle-eyes! Jx
DeleteHello Mr De. lovely as always to see you in the garden.
DeleteI am so pleased you like the Aquilegia as much as I do. I love the effect of them floating over the border on their tall thin stems. I grew them from seed and now they seed themselves. It's well worth the effort; why not give it a go.
We were pleasantly surprised with the colour of the Essex rose but it only has a slight scent.

Ps. Those Gnomes get everywhere !
