The Delargo Gardens - November

 

Here we are then me dears. We have already had overnight temperatures of  -3'c but luckily nothing like the storms and snow of Scotland and the North.

Despite all of that we still have some colour in the garden. Last years Primulas are back in flower and spreading a bit of joy.

 The first of our three Cyclamen is back in flower too;

and with a bit of luck the plucky Pelargoniums will keep going into the Winter and beyond.

I love this Lilac / Lavender colour.

 All the salvias are still flowering but with all of the cold weather we have been having I am not sure for how much longer.

 

I imagine this month will be the last we see the Cobaea in flower.

 Geranium Rozanne seems to have no intention to stop flowering (ever).

 Ok me lovelies, grab your woolly hat and gloves it's all aboard the sky lark for a quick tour of the grounds

The Delargo Gardens - October

Hear we are me dears and the garden is looking very Autumnal.

 Many of the plants have died back ready for Winter but some, like our Ipomoea lobata (Spanish Flag) are at their best now.

As are the Salvias, they featured last month but are at their peak this month. This is Salvia uliginosa

and last but not least Salvia x jamensis “Nachtvlinder”

Coboea scandens is also flowering well at the moment. We grow it up the wall every year but this year have also grown it along the fence. It seems to have flowered better and of course growing horizontally it is much easier to see the flowers. We shall certainly do that again next year.

 One of the unsung heroes of the garden is our plucky little Pelargoniums.

 

They flower all summer and with luck sporadically through the Winter.

Another non-stop flowerer is the amazing and lovely Geranium 'Rozanne'. No wonder it one the 'Chelsea Flower Show' - Plant of the Century. every garden should have some.

 Unexpectedly, Dianthus (Carnation), magenta, is still flowering giving us it's delightful scent.

We were talking about good doers in the garden. Now then me lovelies this is one such and one we rely on every year at 'Delargo Towers' Impatiens hawkeri (New Guinea impatiens) This year we grew the variety 'Aubergine' but it is a much prettier colour than that.

We struggled in the Spring with it but the Ricinus communis, 'New Zealand Purple' or Castor Oil Plant has done well and is coming into flower.

It has not been the best year for our Dahlias.To be honest me dears they have been a bit neglected.

They didn't give a marvelous display but they have flowered right through the Season.

We love Thunbergia (“Black-Eyed Susan”). It has done particularly well against the wall rather than as a free standing pillar. this is ' African Sunset Mix next year I think we will go back to the more traditional bright orange.

There we are then me darlins, you have seen the gems of the collection now it's, 'All Aboard the Skylark' for a quick motorized tour of the Gardens and grounds. I shall meet you in the Tea Rooms afterwards.

Now that you are suitably refreshed with tea and cakes, we find ourselves almost at the end of our visit. There is just enough time to have a look at what's new and what's coming up.

We are pleased to announce an exciting new addition to the collection, Sarcococca hookeriana var. digyna “Purple Stem”

Autumn is here and Winter is not far away and to prove it the first of our Cyclamen persicum has come into flower.

As have the first Polyanthus.

Finally I leave you with a sneak preview of the much anticipated Annual Fuchsia Fest which is held every New Year. This Month the spotlight falls on 'Swing-time'

The Delargo Gardens - September

Well be lovelies, here we are again and late again. I am all behind like a cow's tail.

Summer is over and I feel cheated by it! what a rubbish Summer it was too, What with that and the ever encroaching weed trees depriving us of any sunlight that there might have been we are forced rethink the garden for next year! 

Shade, shade and more shade. We and our plants need and want Sun, sun, sun. Next year the garden will be even more shaded by the evil weed trees.

Summer is gone but what i love about our garden is how it changes and gives new delights as the seasons progress. Above is our Cobaea, which has just come into flower this month.

  It's the first time we have grown this and I love it. Ricinus communis, 'New Zealand Purple' Next year I think we shall have two one either side of the Purple Cordyline

New Guinea Impatiens have given us so much colour and take the shade well. I think we will be using them a lot more next year.

Just starting to flower now, Ipomoea Lobata.

It is always a joy but almost impossible to photograph well.

New to us and sown from seed this Spring 'Agastache Cana, 'Heather Queen'

 and our tried and trusted, Agastache Liquorice Blue. The leaves do smell of liquorice.

The Salvias are truly coming into their own now and are starting to dominate the garden. This is Salvia Rockin Fuchsia.

Salvia 'Love and Wishes'

September has seen the last flowers on our Daylilies. This is Hemerocallis 'Crimson Pirate'. It has flowered really well this year and has been a great joy.

Not performing so well this year, our Dahlias. They are flowering but have failed to give us the display that we have come to expect from them.

Crocosmia Emily McKenzie started flowering last month and is looking fab this month. We love it.

If you need a big splash of colour in your garden this time of year then Begonia 'Sangria' will certainly do the job for you.

Our last Petunia this year and probably for the foreseeable future. They have struggled with the lack of sunshine and will be replaced with Begonias, New Guinea Impatiens and (if we can get them) Mimulus.

Verbena bonariensis always looks fab where ever it is but at the moment mixed in with the tall Salvias it looks amazing.

What can you say about this plant that has not already been said? Geranium "Rozanne". It never stops flowering and is a must have in any garden.

 Another good doer is Nicotiana affinis. It has been flowering non stop since late Spring and shows no sign of stopping now. The scent in the evening is just gorgeous.

Tiny flowers but still a delight Ipomoea quamoclit 'Cardinalis'.
