The Delargo Gardens - August

Hello me dears we is back with our August visit to the Garden. The weather has been up and down and the shade from the evil weed trees are impacting on some of the plants but things are still looking lovely.

This is the second of the two baby bare root Clematis we bought this year; Clematis 'Nelly Moser' The top growth hasn't been up to much but it has done marvellously well with developing a good strong root ball which bodes well for next year.

August and September should be the glory time for our Phlox and Salvias. They are flowering but not as well as we hoped or expected. I was surprised to find that I had not taken one decent photo of any of the Salvias this month, fingers crossed for the next.

Begonias take the shade big time and are providing the majority of colour, Big time!

An Oddity - last year I sowed Foxgloves and Campanula far to late in the year. The plants are looking fab and should do wonders next Spring however, one brave little Foxglove decided to flower in August.

Overlooked and taken for granted, our lovely Bizzy Lizzy. It brightens a dark spot opposite the garden door and has flowered from Spring non-stop.

Well there tiz then, now it's time to hop on to the Delargo Towers miniature steam railway to tour the rest of our vast estate

Summer is not over yet but it's still time to start looking at next year. We are overjoyed that Nicotiana affinis has reappeared unexpectedly after a couple of years absence.

The late sown Campanula waiting for next Spring with this years bare root Thalictrum delavayi 'Hewitt's Double'. I am very excited about both of these.

Back to the now and back to Donny. Yes he is back thank heavens but still more than a little touchy. He has demanded 2 photos for the sneak preview of the upcoming Fuchsia Fest. - Fuchsia Royal Velvet

and Fuchsia R.A.F.

Lovely to have Donny back even if he is still on his 'Soap Box'

There tiz then me lovelies. We hope to see you next month but till then;

It's Ttfn From Donny

  1. This year's miserable Spring meant that all the repotting and nurturing jobs that needed to be done to get the phlox and other "late joys" like Salvia ulignosa into tip-top condition fell by the wayside. It's been a naff year, weather-wise, and with the combination of the murk, the slugs and snails and those encroaching trees, a lot of plants suffered.

Thank heavens for the fuchsias and begonias, I say! They don't mind the gloom at all... Jx

  2. I always enjoy seeing your fuchsias. Such elegance, color and variety. The orange Begonias is very unusual. I loved seeing that. We have what looks like you Bizzy Lizzy in many colors, but I think they are called impatience's here, in the US.

    1. I know you love fuchsias as much as we do and we love having you visit the garden.
We use botanic Latin names because common names can be very confusing and let's be honest none of are common.

Impatiens - Common names in North America include impatiens, jewelweed, touch-me-not, snapweed and patience. As a rule-of-thumb,
"jewelweed" is used exclusively for Nearctic species, and balsam is usually applied to tropical species.
      Thank you Wikipedia
      and thank you Mistress Maddie
      Ttfn.

  3. Wow! Fuchsia R.A.F. is flouncy - I love it! And "Royal Velvet", too. Your vast estate is looking splendid, and what a treat to get a flowering foxglove in August. There were one or two flowering in the woods behind Hexenhäusli Device last month, and I noticed the other day, a handful of flowers on a stunted foxglove in the garden!

    1. Hello dear, lovely to see you.
The Fuchsias are just about holding the show together at the moment and things are definitely turning Autumnal.

  4. Fuschia 'Royal Velvet' is knocking me out - what a stunner! I'm also surprised and happy to see Ms. Nelly Moser flowering so late in the season - it clearly loves being in your care.

    1. Hello me dear, so sorry to keep you waiting in moderation. It is lovely to see you in the garden.
I am so pleased that you mentioned 'Nelly Moser'. I love it because when I was a child I bought my Mum one from Woolworth's and this Spring we bought a bare root cutting to remember her. It has grown very well and has a good root ball so fingers crossed.
It was a joy to see your garden in your blog. Keep on shopping and keep the cookery books coming xxx
      Ttfn
