The Delargo Gardens - August

Here we are again then me darlings with the August Garden

Our new begonias are dominant this month. each flower is the size a a side plate and as soon as I come into the garden I just want to hug them. they are deliciously vulgar.

I love it when things self seed this Nicotiana is still going strong and smells divine.

The blue Phlox has gone over and the pink is just hanging on.

But this one was waiting in the wings to replace them.

As has 'Star Gazer' it has now taken centre stage after all of the other lilies have faded.

Our lovely remaining dahlia is battling on but we have not had much in the way of flower.

More continuity - Campanula glomerata “Superba” looked fab last month. This month the red is over, the blue is still going and the burgundy has just started to flower.

We are still getting a few flowers on the Ipomoea. It's always a joy

Salvia time ! They are looking good but have not hit their full stride yet so stayed tuned.

Salvia Patens.

Salvia 'Amistad'

Salvia 'Rocking Fuchsia'

Salvia 'Kisses and Wishes'

Salvia Uliginosa

There tiz then me dears, Now it's time to climb up into the Land-rover for a tour of our vast  grounds. We start of with the hot border;

We don't often mention the front garden and to be honest their is little to see. this Hemerocallis was put there as punishment for not flowering - now it has.

Now we just have time for a sneak preview of the annual Fuchsia Fest - 'Devonshire Dumpling'

Donny and I hope to see you back in the garden in September.

But till then It's Ttfn from Donny
and it's Ttfn from me

Toodle-loo and Pip Pip.

  1. It was such a relief to get a brief bit of summer in August, even if it did go grotty again at the end. The plants don't mid, of course!

Begonias are not to everyone's taste (and I know neither of us were keen for years), but those blowsy bitches really have been a joy this year! Jx

    1. In an ideal world we would have a large sunny garden, we have neither.
In a shady garden nothing packs a punch and gives a full on wallop of colour like the large flowered Begonias. As the adorable and adored Carol Klein would say 'right plant, right place' (isn't it).

  2. Those begonias are 70s soft porn in flower form. For shame! (They really are quite spectacular, though)

My favourite in August are your Phlox(es?) - particularly the "replacement". That Salvia Uliginosa shot is one we don't see very often (if at all - I certainly don't remember any similar shots). And do I spy new shoots at the top of your Cordyline stump?

    1. Hello Mr De, lovely to see you in the garden.
Uliginosa is notoriously difficult to photograph. We have had it for a good many years but this year it has surpassed itself.
We did have new shoots on the Cordyline but I am a feared that they have died back (time will tell)
As for Soft Porn, I know nothing of such matters no matter what decade is in mention.

  3. Stargazer Lily - oh so beautiful!!! I love them.
I have been away, and I've come back and everyone is being a bit frisky. More so than usual. It must have been the heatwave we had - it must have got everyone's blood up.

    1. Hello me dear.
The weather has been amazing as was 'Star Gazer'.
Lovely to see you back in the garden. Hope you had a nice break and have been able to cope amongst all that 'friskiness'. The change into Autumnal weather should calm everything down a bit.

  4. I just read back and saw your lovely response to my post. Oh my goodness though look at your containers LOSING THEIR MINDS! I have exactly the same attitude about begonias as you - they're rude, crude and glorious in their excesses; and yours are just the tits. Perfection. All these pix are food for the soul. Many's the time I've lurked here since I lost my garden and luxuriated in yours. Thank you. OX

    1. Hello me dear lovely to see you in the garden again.
You are always welcome luxuriate here in the Gardens of Delargo Towers any time.
Reading your blog I think we have a similar mind set. I have been thinking of doing a monthly post based on my cookery book collection and you and your addiction to cookery books has inspired me to give it ago although I am notorious for starting new projects and never following them through,
