Here we are again then me darlins.
We've come to the end of a very disappointing and cold April. Everything is at least two weeks behind and we have had to crank up the boilers here at 'Delargo Towers' to keep us and the seedlings warm.
The Tulips don't mind it though and have looked fab all month
The main display is 25 + mixed bulbs crammed into one pot. They don't flower at the same time so that it creates an ever changing surprise of colour and shapes.
Tulip “Marquise de la Coquette” in the front window box
Mixed in with Narcissus Thalia
...and our wonderful Wallflowers have created a marvellous display
We were photo-bombed by a male Hairy-footed flower bee in this shot. They enjoy wallflowers even more than we do!
This is the overall effect and we love it. The smell is heavenly.
Osteospermum 'Blue Eyed Beauty' is looking very jolly in the Sunshine.
New for us and doing well is Phlox subulata “Fabulous Rose”.
Not new, but as it was buried up in the 'top field' we never got to see it, is Geranium phaeum “Samobor”. It is now potted up and sits in my wine time corner so that we can enjoy it.
That was the stars of the month but lets not forget the "supporting cast".
Perhaps it is due to the low temperatures but they are lasting very well this year and still going
All aboard the 'Sky Lark' (our name for a very old Land Rover, if we had one) me dears. It is time for a quick tour of the grounds.
Most of the Fuchsias are alive but very slow to get going. They have not liked the cold North winds at all.
The Dahlias are now potted on and will have to fend for themselves.
The Ricinus seedlings came up like Sycamore trees; unfortunately I have managed to scorch them and give them a chill at the same time so fingers crossed they will be OK.
Just coming into flower now and harbingers of May:
Bluebells up in the top field
Forget-Me-Nots in the newly planted East Border
and Auriculas
There tiz then me lovelies till next time then
I will pop the kettle on when I see you coming.
Lets hope it warms up a bit soon.

"Pop the kettle on"? Crack open the gin, don't you mean?!
ReplyDeleteI can see why your mixed-tulips and tulips-narcissus-wallflower displays are the stars of the month. And with a V I Bee guest, no less! And that Geranium "Samobor" is really quite lovely.
Speaking of geraniums, your giant Geranium maderense (I remembered!) looks like it's about to explode into flower!
I've put one of my Ricinus outside today to harden off a bit (it will go in the red greenhouse overnight). No fears about scorching as it's been on-and-off rain all day. However, it might get a chill as it's been used to the sunny windowsill of the bathroom up until now.
And I've just come back from the garden centre where I bought two trays of 18 pots each to pot up the reams upon reams of Delargo Seeds Ipomoea, Thunbergia and Cobaea seedlings that are still languishing in their trays.
I was being polite, it's always Gin O'clock when we have guests here at Delargo Towers.
DeleteGeranium maderense is ready to explode but like the Fuchsia is just sitting there awaiting some warmer weather. Our seedlings are all back in the kitchen for the duration. There is hardly room enough for me !
Despite the chilly weather, the Spring display has been fabulous in its own special way. It's such a joy to catch a waft of the wallflowers as soon as one walks out of the back door! Fingers crossed it warms up sometime soon, so that things which have been shivering (like the Geranium maderense as Mr DeVice mentioned) get a chance to flourish/flower before the cold wind browns off all the buds... ReplyDeleteThe Met. Office says that it was the coldest April for 60 years and there is now sign of it warming up yet.
DeleteYou had me, yet again, with all the tulips! So pretty and vibrant. I always been a fan of Fort-Me Nots and bluebells too.
ReplyDeleteI will eagerly await for your lovely selection of fuchsias and dahlia. Dahlia are a summer favorite flower of mine.
Hello Mistress
DeleteThe Tulips have been lush this year. I love not knowing what is in the mix until they flower. The colour combinations you get can be surprising. You would never choose to put them together but somehow they work. There is no such thing as a colour clash in Spring.
We hope the Dahlias will be in flower by late May but a lot depends on the weather warming up a bit. They are outside but sulking at the moment.
Beautiful! I do believe spring is my favorite time of the year for flowers. Such color and variety. I bet your garden will be stunning by summer?
ReplyDeleteHello Gretchen.
DeleteHow kind of you to pop into the garden and leave a comment.
After a long miserable Winter we all need a good a blast of colour.
The colour palate will soften as we go into Summer.
We only have a very small garden but we have plenty of goodies crammed into what space we do have to hopefully put on a bit of a show.

Oh I love tulips!! And Forget-me-nots. All the trees where I live have now flushed - and Devon is beginning to look pretty again!
ReplyDeletePity it's so cold.

Spring is a wonderful time anywhere but especially in Devon.
DeletePrimroses, Cow Parsley and Stichwort in the hedge rows, Bluebells and wild Garlic in the woods and Red campion to come. Pure Joy !
